Brass Quintet and Brass Chamber Ensemble Competition Information
International Brass Chamber Music Festival
University of Louisville School of Music

October 11th through 14th, 2008

Host Ensemble
Louisville Brass is the resident brass chamber ensemble at the University of Louisville School of Music. Comprised exclusively of School of Music faculty, Louisville Brass is committed to artistic performance and to the sharing of knowledge of literature and styles through clinics and master classes. The ensemble is well-versed in a wide range of styles, and the repertoire list ranges from the Renaissance to jazz. The members of Louisville Brass are Michael Tunnell and Herbert Koerselman, trumpets; Bruce Heim, horn; Brett Shuster, trombone; and John Jones, tuba.

The festival will host several top ranking brass ensembles. International Trumpet Guild Journal calls Spanish Brass "one of the most exciting and artistic brass quintets to come on the scene in recent years... a gloriously brilliant performance." Diane Wright with The Herald in Everett, Washington says of Proteus 7 that "these young musicians have an ease of playing and a genuine respect that makes you realize how vital it is for young people to see such groups." Gary Barrow of the ITG Journal writes of Sonus Brass, "sounds as tight as any brass quintet around!…consistently strong performances and energetic spirit…an exemplar in the fundamentals of quality ensemble playing." Bieler Tagblatt of Switzerland says of Øystein Baadsvik that his "playing is distinguished by a slim, noble tone, absolute technical security and a perfect intonation. View Øystein Baadsvik's performance on Fnugg Blue on YouTube. Founded in 2004 by Artistic Director and Conductor, Anthony Parnther, Appalachian Brass Orchestra is quickly earning a reputation as one of the premier Brass Ensembles in North America.

Spanish Brass, Proteus 7 and Sonus Brass will be providing workshops as well as concerts.
