Brass Quintets—Pre-college division (18 years or younger)
Required Repertoire: Anthony Holborne Three Pieces (BCMP edition); Ludwig Maurer Lied (BCMP); Lauren Bernofsky Passacaglia (Go Fish, available through BCMP); Collier Jones Four Movements for Five Brass (Mentor).
Brass Quintets--Undergraduate Division
Required Repertoire: Johann Pezel Three Pieces (BCMP edition); Ludwig Mauer Scherzo and Lied (Mentor); Kazimierz Machala Brass Quintet No. 1 (Presser, available through BCMP); Lauren Bernofsky Suite for Brass Quintet (FJH, available through BCMP).
Brass Quintets—Graduate/Professional Level
Required Repertoire: Giovanni Gabrieli Canzona No. 2 (BCMP edition in original key); Britton Theurer Americantus (Balquhidder); Adam Schoenberg Reflecting Light (BCMP).
Rules for All Quintet Divisions
First Round: Quintets will be required to play a fifteen minute program selected by the judges from the required repertoire. The required fifteen minute program will be announced prior to the opening of the festival. Final Round: Quintets will play a 30 minute program from their prepared program. Groups should plan a 50 minute program that includes the required repertoire and other music from the brass quintet original repertoire. For the final 50 minute program, ensembles may select movements from the required repertoire and add other works of their own choice. Arrangements and transcriptions (other than the required selections) are not acceptable for this competition. Ensembles performing from photocopies will be disqualified.
Brass Ensemble Competitions (pre-college, undergraduate, graduate)
This is open to brass trios, quartets, trumpet choir, horn choir, trombone choir, tuba choir and mixed brass ensembles no larger than 12 members. Mixed ensembles may have instruments other than brass but should be primarily brass groups.
Rules: Each group should arrive at the festival with a 50 minute program prepared that is primarily drawn from original repertoire for the ensemble (transcriptions and arrangements should not be the major part of the program). Round One: The judges will select a 15 minute program to be heard from your prepared music. Final Round: The judges will select a 30 minute program from your prepared music. Ensembles performing from photocopies will be disqualified.
Awards: First place awards will be given in the 3 brass quintet divisions. Up to three awards will be given in the brass ensemble divisions. Minimum award amounts will be announced by May 15, 2009. For the 2008 Brass Quintet Competitions the first place awards had a total cash value of $2500 per award.
